NYE/Leeds/Galway

Well, what can I say about 2012 so far? It hasn't really 'gone to plan' as such, but I know that moving back to Leeds has been a lot of fun already; more on that later though..

- NYE

In keeping with chronological order I'd like to start by giving some blog love to everyone who attended Ferry Corsten's NYE gig at Brixton Academy; it was really cool to see everyone from Londonium once more and also finally go to such a legendary venue. I'm not the biggest trance fan at all but really enjoyed Marcel Woods' set which consisted of a lot of great house tracks. All in all it was just pretty cool to do something different for NYE as I usually chill out at home.

I ended up staying at a friends place the next night and grinding a Sunday session on stars to no avail before heading up to Leeds early the day after to sign the papers and move into our new place =)

- Leeds

As I mentioned earlier I am now back in Leeds, living with two of my closest friends in poker, Dan and Ben. Our flat is pretty decent value and couldn't be in a better location really being literally 30 seconds from the train station. Leeds homes pretty much as many UK poker heroes as London these days so its been great going on impromptu dinners and nights out seemingly every day. I'm starting to regret buying our flat a beer pong table though as it has been the beginning and the end of many cold Leeds evenings so far. I'll allow you to imagine the table and its accessories strewn across the centre of the following picture, with the sofas pushed out of view and with a collection of monitors and computers under the far window!

It feels pretty sweet finally having a proper setup in the form of a brand new shiny 27" iMac complete with all the add-ons and a really comfortable Aeron chair. The Apple touchpad also means that I don't have to sacrifice my touchpad tekkers as a result of grinding on just a 15" Macbook for the last year or so which is sweet. Overall I'm really happy with the purchase, especially with my love for Apple's design and Lion OS X.

- Online Poker

2012 has been pretty interesting so far in terms of poker even if I've not played as much as I'd of liked due to the distraction of being in the heart of the city. The year begun with a number of swingy days playing relatively high stakes HU PLO against a couple of people I have significant lifetime history with. I ended up in the red overall for these handful of sessions as a result of losing the majority of the 20 biggest pots during this period which sucked, but thats PLO at times.

Outside of that I haven't played many MTT sessions outside of the weekends, usually just playing a handful of the better value tourneys with some HU SnGs on the side. I final tabled the $265 KO on a sunday for $8k at the end of January which stands out as the only decent run I've had in proper MTTs, although I've won/chopped/cashed the daily $215 HU probably more than anyone else so far this year; even if it only gets on average 15 runners a day. I'm winning a little at HU SnGs but as before just haven't put in the volume really as this graph shows:

- Live Poker

I've only played a few events so far this year including the monthly £500 Deepstack at Dusk Till Dawn Nottingham and UKIPT Galway. I played great in both of these events even though I didn't cash either and was glad to see that the confidence I had in my live game hadn't deteriorated at all during the hiatus of the past few months. Galway was great craic as Irish events always are and its great to see the tour up the buyins to 770 £/ buyins across the board for the new season and offer 6 figures up top in such a great value tournament. The event will be remembered for the drinking though, with the lineup of heroes present there was always going to be some serious rofls. The event spawned a new drink; the 'Galway Lion'; a tequila slammer followed by a jagerbomb instead of a slice of lemon. Many 'Lions' were ordered over the 5 days we were in town, which when combined with a few crazy nights in Leeds either side of the event = time for detox!

We managed to get really good value on the trip to Galway through new company Main Event Travel ( http://maineventtravel.com/ ) The company launched a few weeks ago now with an event at the Full House Poker Club down in Reigate which our flat all attended and had a great time catching up with even more characters we hadn't seen in a while. They put on a £200 rebuy to celebrate the launch which we all bricked but which was organised really well and managed to get a decent amount of runners. I can't see any reason why the company won't be a great success with the niche they've found and the team they have behind them so I look forward to getting great value on future live events.

As usual I've been grinding a couple of series on iTunes recently including finally getting round to watching Mad Men and Eastbound and Down which are both great for very different reasons, both highly recommended.

I thought I'd end the blog with a link to Negreanu's vlog regarding the whole FTP saga where Daniel fires both barrels at Bitar, Ferguson and Lederer. As one of the best and most well known ambassadors for poker it's great to see him tell it how it is: http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/daniel-negreanu/video-blog.php?movieID=1

I'll update sometime in the next couple of weeks as I have a lot of things planned for March and April already =)

Until next time, take care,

LF
